Rolling Stone Names Aretha #1 Singer of All Time

So, for the past two months or so, issues of Rolling Stone have been showing up in my mailbox at home without me ever (at least that I can recall) signing up for a subscription.

Either way I’ve been enjoying reading them. The issue that came yesterday featured a list ( I love lists) of the top 100 singers of all time. What’s cool about the list is that the write-ups on each of the top 10 singers were written by…singers.

To my surprise the entire top ten was composed of singers that I know all too well from the days of riding in the car with mom dukes.

Here’s the list just for good measure:

10. James Brown – Written by Iggy Pop
9. Stevie Wonder – Written by Cee-Lo
8. Otis Redding – Written by Booker T. Jones
7. Bob Dylan – Written by Bono (U2)
6. Marvin Gaye – Written by Alicia Keys
5. John Lennon – Written by Jackson Browne
4. Sam Cooke – Written by Van Morrison
3. Elvis Presley – Written by Robert Plant
2. Ray Charles – Billy Joel
1. Aretha Franklin – Mary J. Blige

Other notables on the list include Al Green (#14), Whitney Houston (#34), Luther Vandross (#54) and Mary J closed it out at #100. She’s the only “hip hop” artist ( I tend to categorize Mary as Hip Hop & B)on the list.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the list. Feel free to throw your two pennies in.

Meanwhile, Bow to the queen:
