Real Bad News

All across America, jobs are being lost at an alarming rate.
All across America, jobs are being lost at an alarming rate.

I had to dig the newspaper out of about a foot of snow this morning and was more depressed with the headline than I was with the snow.

The State of Indiana had the nation’s highest jobless rate jump during the month of December.

The news of the state gave me pause. But I was even more moved because  Gary, my hometown, has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state for a city of its size  at 9.8%.

Coincidently, today is the day that President Obama’s major economic stimulus plan will be voted on by Congress. Democrats and Republicans have been sparring back forth about the best way to go about stimulating our struggling economy.

A number of Republicans have been critical of the proposed bill saying that it contains wasteful spending and doesn’t include deep enough tax cuts.

There isn’t much doubt about whether or not the bill will pass considering that the Democrats control the House. However, President Obama wants the bill to have a bipartisan feel to it. Whether or not it will remains to be seen.

What is certain, is that the country needs a serious shot in the arm.
