This is the fourth and final part of Jabari’s roundtable with Young Guru, Young Chris and Young Neef.
New artists were were this week’s topic.
Guru made an excellent point about the youngsters by putting in perspective how young they really are.
Just think, if you were born in 1990, your 17th birthday was in 2007. Meaning your senior year in high school days would be musically dominated by Crank dat Soulja Boy, while mine was highlighted by the Jay-Z/Nas beef. Big difference.
If the artists mentioned in this video are new to you, you’re a whole year behind schedule. Luckily there’s the internet to help you play catch up.
Wale’s A Mixtape About Nothing was in my mind the best mixtape of 2008 and could compete with a lot of studio albums. It was built around the sitcom Seinfeld, which was famously billed as the show about nothing. The mixtape, much like the show, was just the opposite.
It touched on a number of issues from racism, the struggling music industry and love for his hometown in this joint here which is my favorite from the mixtape:
Wale is currently prepping a new mixtape with 9th Wonder entitled Back to the Feature which is set to drop any day now.
